What are cookies
Cookies are small text files that websites visited by the user send to their device (usually the browser), where they are stored in the browser’s folder while the user is browsing a website, and then transmitted back to the same sites during subsequent visits. They are used to improve navigation, store user preferences (such as username, password, etc.), track user interests and preferences, and enable targeted marketing initiatives or the provision of services such as newsletters.
Limiting their use may affect the user experience while browsing. Blocking or deleting cookies from the browser cache may result in incomplete use of the services offered by the website.
For the purposes of this policy, cookies can be divided into two categories: technical cookies and profiling cookies. Profiling cookies – as defined by Provision No. 229/2014 of the Italian Data Protection Authority – are used to create user profiles and send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user during web browsing. Starfish Apartments does not use profiling cookies. Therefore, they are not covered by this document.
Technical cookies are those used solely for the purpose of “carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network, or as strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user to provide such service” (see Article 122, paragraph 1 of the Italian Privacy Code). This category includes both persistent and session cookies.
Session cookies are temporary cookies that remain active only for the duration of the user’s browsing session. When the browser is closed, session cookies expire. They are typically used to identify users when they access a website, remember preferences while navigating between pages, and provide previously collected information.
A common example is the shopping cart on an e-commerce website. When visiting a catalog page and selecting items, session cookies remember the selection so that the items remain in the cart when proceeding to checkout. Without session cookies, the cart would be empty on the next page.
Persistent cookies help websites remember user data and settings for future visits. This allows faster and more convenient access, as users do not need to log in again. Persistent cookies remain active even after the browser is closed.
Other functionalities enabled by cookies include language selection, theme selection, menu preferences, bookmarks, and more. User preferences selected during a visit will be remembered through persistent cookies during subsequent visits.
Third-party cookies are set and managed by organizations other than the website owner. They are used, for example, when a website displays content or advertisements provided by another server or third-party website. The browser collects information from different sources so that all elements are displayed on the same page, resulting in multiple cookies being stored.
All cookies can be removed through browser settings or dedicated tools. It is also possible to block their creation. However, in this case, some website services may not function properly, and certain features may not be available.
Cookie acceptance
Except for strictly necessary technical cookies, the provision of data is left to the user’s discretion. By continuing to browse the website after viewing the banner and using services that require cookies, the user consents to their use.
By closing the banner, continuing navigation, or interacting with any element of the page, the user consents to the use of all cookies (including third-party cookies). This consent is stored in a technical cookie so that the banner is not shown again in future visits. Users may withdraw their consent at any time by deleting the “cookieAcceptanceCookie”.
Privacy and security of cookies
It should be noted that cookies are not viruses. They are simple text files that are not executed or interpreted by the browser. Therefore, they cannot replicate or spread across networks like viruses. However, they may still be used for potentially improper purposes.
Since cookies store information about preferences and browsing history, they can be used similarly to spyware. Many anti-spyware programs detect cookies as potential threats.
Cookies are transmitted between the browser and the website. In rare cases, data transmission could be intercepted, for example when using unsecured Wi-Fi networks. Other attacks may involve server misconfigurations. If a website does not enforce secure connections (HTTPS), attackers could exploit this vulnerability to collect personal data through insecure channels.
How to disable or delete cookies
Most browsers automatically accept cookies, but users can change settings to refuse them. However, disabling cookies may prevent proper navigation and limit website functionality.
If you do not want your device to receive cookies, you can modify your browser settings (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Safari, etc.). Some features of the website may only work properly if cookies are enabled. Disabling cookies may negatively affect your browsing experience.
